Prayer for President

Tomorrow Joe Biden will become the 46th president of the United States.

As general superintendent, I am calling upon Assemblies of God ministers and adherents to commit themselves to prayer for President Biden and his administration.

We follow the apostle Paul’s admonition to Timothy: “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving should be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live in peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:1–4).

Heavenly Father, today I pray for our nation and the 46th president of the United States of America, Joe Biden, as he assumes office in this historically unprecedented time.

Your Word declared that “the heart of the king is in the hands of the Lord . . . He directs where He pleases,” (Proverbs 21:1). We ask you to guide our president.

Lord, I pray that You would draw President Biden to Yourself, and that he would seek You above all else (Matthew 6:33). May Your interests prevail over all special interest groups.

Lord, I pray You will give our president wisdom beyond his own understanding and discernment in administering justice (1 Kings 3:12). May he lean on that wisdom and reject advice from those who would lead us astray.

Lord, I pray for the safety of our president and his family (Psalm 32:7). Protect them from evil plots and keep them healthy.

Lord, I pray for Your grace to canopy our country. Use us, Your people, to bring healing and unity to our hurting and divided nation (John 13:35). May You give us a spiritual vaccine to guard our hearts against the moral pandemic of division and hatred that has infected our society. Help us to be the people of God and the nation of God that You have called us to be (Romans 15:13).

Lord, I pray that the transformative power of Your Word will produce a united collaboration within lawmakers and all branches of government. As a nation, God, help us to desire righteousness more than our own rights. May peace reign in our nation (2 Corinthians 13:11).

Finally, Lord, we pray these things acknowledging that our only help and our only hope is found in You and not in the kingdoms of this world or in an any elected leader. The challenges we face—from the COVID-19 pandemic to social unrest and economic uncertainty—seem impossible to us, but they are not impossible for You (Matthew 19:26).

Thank You for privileging us to live in this great country. As we strive to honor and bless You, we humbly ask You to bless America.

In the strong name of Jesus, Amen.
