Devotional Focus: Overcoming Uncaring Attitudes
“How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!’” (Romans 10:14, ESV)
Each of us who knows Jesus as Lord and Savior possesses an amazing treasure—salvation—that blesses us in this life and gives us hope for all eternity. We carry that treasure around with us wherever we go—in the marketplace, our neighborhoods, among family and friends. We know a lot about the wonderful gift we have received, and we enjoy talking and singing about it among ourselves. Yet the treasure we possess is the one our Lord wants everyone to have; but, in order for most people to receive this treasure, we have to share it.
Sadly, like the priest and
the Levite in Luke’s account of the Good Samaritan, we can be apathetic or
complacent about helping people who risk a fate much worse than a physical
beating—eternity without God. We pass by, as it were, on the other side of the
road. Even though we are well aware that there are lost and dying people all
around us, it’s very easy to think it’s someone else’s job to reach the lost or
we may feel inadequate to witness; worse yet, we may not care.
Undoubtedly, many of us
have crossed paths with nonbelievers and did not take the opportunity to share
the love of Christ and tell them about His salvation. May we not miss the next
chance, the next open door that God provides to help someone find Jesus.
Indeed, how beautiful are the feet of those who share the good news with
others!
