Acts 2 Journey Impacts Southern Latin District Churches
Nearly half the churches in the Assemblies of God Southern Latin District are currently participating in the Acts 2 Journey. Southern Latin District Superintendent David Zayas’ church, Iglesia Fuente De Vida Asamblea de Dios (Fountain of Life Church) in Woodstock, Georgia, is no exception.
“Fountain of Life is 8 years old and has about 120 members,” Zayas says. “As a church we know God has greater things in store for us, and today we are excited that through the Acts 2 Journey our church is being strengthened and we are learning how to improve some areas of ministry.
A team of about 10 lay leaders and laypersons from the church attended the Acts 2 introductory sessions at Fountain of Life that were facilitated by Alton Garrison and Rick Allen from Church Transformation Initiative at the AG national office in Springfield, Missouri.
“The first session was a real eye-opener as we took assessments to see where our church lined up in the process,” Zayas says. “Discovering areas where we needed to focus was gratifying because it gave us a starting point, and that was discipleship. We immediately started working to strengthen that area.”
Zayas says that Garrison made one point that resonated with him. “Alton said, ‘Many pastors pray for unity in the church body, but in reality we need to pray for harmony in the church body and unity in the church leadership.’ That statement really got my attention. Many times a church leadership team may be meeting together, and yet not be focused on leading together. This concept immediately changed the way I prayed.”
Zayas says that due to the strong endorsements of other districts concerning the Acts 2 Journey and seeing the church growth statistics for themselves, his district’s leaders knew the process was a proven success.
However, Zayas also expressed his thankfulness for AGTrust partners, saying that for many of his district’s churches, the AGTrust scholarship was what made it possible for them to afford to take the Acts 2 Journey.
“As leader of this relatively new district (previously part of the Southeastern Spanish District) with more than 60 churches,” Zayas says, “I believe that Acts 2 is a key to helping us establish a unified identity.”
So far, a total of 570 AG churches in 24 AG districts and in one overseas country, have participated in the Acts 2 Journey. At least 280 of those churches received a scholarship from AGTrust.
