Week of Prayer: Day 5

I Can Pray in the Spirit

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans” (Romans 8:26).

Have you encountered times when you simply could not express in words the burden of your heart in prayer? Probably every Christ follower has experienced such a feeling many times. When praying for loved ones in need, when facing challenging decisions, or interceding for critical issues in our world or other concerns, sometimes we cannot sufficiently articulate what we are feeling, nor do we even know how we should pray. Additionally, there may be times when we feel compelled to pray, but don’t know what to pray for. In those moments, we can receive amazing help from the Holy Spirit.

A wonderful ministry of the Paraclete — the Holy Spirit who comes alongside us — is to supernaturally help us move beyond our weakness and limited understanding and express to the Father what we cannot put into words. In those times, perhaps all we can do is groan and travail in prayer. Yet, we can have the assurance that the Holy Spirit is interceding before the throne on our behalf. He knows exactly what is needed for He understands the mind of the Father.

As you go to the Lord in prayer for circumstances that are perplexing and difficult, know that God the Holy Spirit is ready to pray to the Father through you and make your petition known. He is our powerful Advocate!
