Hannah Shearer and David Alexander were each awarded the Zollie L. Smith Jr. Scholarship for 2018-2019.
The Zollie L. Smith Jr. scholarship is awarded annually to two college-age children of an active U.S. missionary or chaplain. The 2018–2019 recipients are Hannah Shearer and David Alexander.Hannah Shearer of Camp Lejuene, North Carolina, attends Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. She is the daughter of Brian and Sheryl Shearer who serve as military chaplains.
“This scholarship takes me one step closer to achieving my dream to give the gift of art to the next generation,” states Hannah. “I want to give students the opportunity to learn how to express themselves in a way that only art can provide.”
David Alexander of Indianapolis attends Butler University in Indianapolis. He is the son of Jeff and Sara Alexander, U.S. missionaries with Chi Alpha Campus Ministries, U.S.A.
“A college education has given me a glimpse of the world and how it’s divided,” David says. “It has taught me who I am as a follower of Jesus and also what my purpose is as a student, and after graduation as a member of society: to love those who are searching for the redeeming love of Jesus. This education is preparing me to spread Christ’s love to the whole world within the mission field of a college campus.”
This U.S. Missions scholarship program was created to honor the passion Zollie L. Smith Jr. (U.S. Missions executive director 2007–2017) has for equipping the next generation for ministry, and to recognize his commitment to Assemblies of God U.S. missionaries and chaplains.
