"Awesome" Week of Prayer Coming Jan. 2-8

The 2022 Week of Prayer for the Assemblies of God, slated to be held Jan. 2-8, is a purposeful and prayerful focus on the nature and names of Jesus. Using seven chapters from Dick Eastman’s newly released devotional book, Awesome! Exploring the Nature and Names of Jesus, this year’s Week of Prayer is designed to help individuals put aside distractions while opening their hearts and minds to the reality of just Who Jesus is.

General Superintendent Doug Clay urges all churches and Christ followers to participate in the Week of Prayer, stating in a video message: “Turn away from all of the news, turn away from the pandemic talk, turn away from politics and turn your attention to a five-letter, two-syllable name: Jesus.”

Eastman, the founder of Every Home for Christ, explains that Psalm 46:10b in the Message paraphrase jumped out to him when he wrote the devotional as it states: “Step out of traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your High God, above politics, above everything.”

“I think it’s a challenge for us [in] these days,” Eastman said.

The seven days of this year’s Week of Prayer each are themed and include: The Supreme Jesus, The Awesome Jesus, The Beautiful Jesus, The Human Jesus, The Divine Jesus, The Preeminent Jesus, and The Incomparable Jesus.

There are multiple free items in English and Spanish provided for the church and individuals to help enhance the week. The free downloads include a daily prayer devotional featuring the seven excerpted chapters from Awesome! in a booklet form, a bulletin insert with points of prayer listed, promotional/informational videos, presentation slides, a collection of social media graphics, and an email header. Also, there is a bonus full-length midweek/small group prayer service video featuring Clay and Eastman focusing on the impact of Spirit-filled prayer, with breaks for group prayer offered throughout the video.

In addition, this year churches will find the first prayer point, The Supreme Jesus, presented in two video lengths (short and full version) and available to potentially use in service or online; a video interview between Clay and Eastman talking about the significance of the names and nature of Christ; and an online prayer sign-up page where churches and individuals can sign up for times to keep the Week of Prayer in prayer.

Clay says he’s excited about this year’s Week of Prayer and the message it shares.
