SEU to Launch Master of Science in Medical Sciences Degree

Southeastern University, pending commission approval, will offer a new program in medical school preparation this fall.
LAKELAND, Fla. — Beginning in fall 2023, Southeastern University (SEU) will be launching a new program in medical school preparation* — the Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS). The innovative degree program will provide a solid foundation for students aiming to begin advanced medical study to become a doctor, dentist, pharmacist, or physician assistant.

The program, offered through the university’s partnership with Tiber Health and Ponce Health Sciences University, will be able to be completed in three semesters through an accelerated timeline.

As the only program of its type in Polk County — and one of the few nationwide to incorporate faith-based opportunities — the course content of the MSMS is designed to parallel the first year of medical school to enhance students’ competitiveness for admission to health professional schools.

“Although they are highly prepared and capable, many students do not qualify for admission during their first round of medical school applications,” said Dr. Aimee Franklin, dean of the College of Natural & Health Sciences. “We recognized the need for students to feel more confident when applying to medical schools and to have the chance to create connections with their peers who are on the same journey.”

The MSMS will be delivered through a “flipped classroom” synchronous learning approach. With this format, students will receive cutting-edge instruction in a small group cohort format.

“This degree sets students up to succeed once they are admitted to medical school. While getting into medical school is certainly a challenging goal, succeeding once you get there should be the driving motivation when choosing how to spend gap years,” said Franklin.
