Call to Prayer for Ukraine

General Superintendent Doug Clay offers ways to pray for the events unfolding in Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

Like many of you, I am deeply concerned about the horrific events that are unfolding in Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

It’s easy to browse through social media and flip through cable news channels and feel a sense of disgust, and even powerlessness. That’s not the case. Second Corinthians 10:4 says, “The weapons we use in our fight are not the world's weapons but God's powerful weapons, which we use to destroy strongholds” (GNT).

As Assemblies of God churches gather this weekend, I am asking that we use this powerful weapon of prayer, to intercede for:

  • The national Church, our partners, and global workers in Eastern Europe who are on the ground and effectively being the body of Christ.
  • For the leadership of the countries who are engaged in this conflict and for the various world leaders involved in diplomacy.
  • For the soldiers and their families who are actively involved.
  • For the innocent victims.
  • For the displaced who are seeking shelter.
  • For those who are living in fear, and have no relationship with Christ.

I do appreciate the overwhelming generosity of those who are financially contributing to relief efforts. It’s enabling AG World Missions and our partners to be on the ground providing critical support to those in the greatest need. But today, I am calling on our Church and our family to pray. To be united in active, fervent prayer.

Will you please take a few moments in your weekend services to pray?

I am reminded of what David said, when he was fleeing from Absalom:

Lord, how many are my foes!
How many rise up against me!
Many are saying of me,
‘God will not deliver him.’
But you, Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
I call out to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain
(Psalm 3:1-4, NIV).
