Prayer for America
On July 4, our nation celebrates 250 years of independence. Early pilgrims sought a new land where they could practice their faith without hindrance. They understood that their perseverance through famines, disease, and war to establish a new nation could only happen with God’s help.
“It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favors.”
― George Washington
As we remember and celebrate our independence, let’s not forget to give thanks to God for the many freedoms we continue to enjoy. May we as a nation seek Him first as we move forward into the future.
Would you join me in praying for our nation today?
Pray for unity and peace in our nation and around the world.
“Live in harmony with one another … If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:16, 18, NIV).
Division has come to define our nation. Pray that God will heal the divisions that exist in our country. May we repent of hatred in our hearts which drives us to division. Instead of riots and violence, may calm, goodness, and kindness prevail. We also pray for peace and an end to hostilities currently raging in numerous areas of the world.
Pray for God’s continued favor.
“Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands” (Psalm 90:17, NIV).
We are grateful that God has blessed us beyond what we deserve. Our nation has enjoyed the freedoms and economic prosperity that have enabled America to be a major force in sending missionaries and global workers throughout the world to proclaim the gospel, establishing the Church in nations with no Christian witness, and providing relief in times of global crises. May God keep His hand of favor to allow these efforts to continue and accelerate.
Pray for wisdom for our nation’s leaders.
“Without wise leadership, a nation falls; there is safety in having many advisers” (Proverbs 11:14, NLT).
We ask for God to give wisdom to our nation’s leaders as He enables them to work for the good of our country’s nearly 343 million residents. Pray for members of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government at local, state, and federal levels. May they make godly decisions and operate in the fear of the Lord.
Pray for continued freedom to share the gospel.
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance” (Psalm 33:12, NIV).
May we never take for granted the freedom we enjoy to read and share God’s word and live an effective Christian witness. As threats to these basic rights seem to be increasing, we ask for God’s help in overcoming these challenges so that Christians may continue to share the good news.
Pray our churches would reflect the love of Christ in their communities with boldness and compassion.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile” (Romans 1:16, NIV).
Pray that we would have a heart for those who remain outside of Christ. May God give us courage to share His love with our family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers.
Pray for revival in our nation.
“Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14, NLT).
America’s only hope for the future is true repentance and turning to the Lord Jesus. We pray for a spiritual awakening to again sweep through our land that transforms lives.
